About Pride Moths

The concept of Pride Moth has been a running meme on the Internet for a good while now– and honestly, what’s more representative of the art of transformation than the majestic moth? These critters come in countless colors, shapes, and sizes. Their humble beginnings take them through many sticky stages of change, before ultimately emerging victorious in their final form. The flirtations of the mystical moth with the light in the darkness is a powerful metaphor for marginalized people and the communities we’ve always managed to seek, find, and build.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍

Ours is a flame that cannot be extinguished.

It's not easy.

We are told we aren't supposed to be here.

We are taught to feel ashamed of who we are.

We are forced to decide if spreading our wings is worth the risks.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍

Representation matters.

Representation is the light that guides us to living in ways we can genuinely relate, and it grants us our shared liberation.

It's where values like solidarity, intersectionality, and accessibility finally take shape, as we embrace our rage and inherent worth and dignity. Representation is an act of defiance in a world that goes to great lengths to intimidate and keep those it senselessly hates from owning our truth– to keep our true form hidden in the cocoon.

Representation saves lives.

Pride Moths are about representation.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍

Resistance, acceptance, solidarity, diversity, accessibility, community– pride. This is a labor of love.

First and foremost, Pride Moths celebrate our authentically colorful lives in a world where many will try to tell us our colors are offensive, shameful, or not real. I seek to create the representation I’ve always wanted to see in this world…

…one moth at a time.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Ira Forbes!

(they/them)

I am a queer, trans, nonbinary, neurodivergent, chronically ill, and disabled, artist from Fort Worth, Texas. I was born and raised in this notoriously anti-people-like-me state– which is a great place to be from! It's shaped my world view for the better, worse, and eccentric.

I've been drawing since I was little, and my relationship with art has always mirrored my relationship to the world around me, which can be intense– but that intensity is a genuine passion for me!

There is so much love, rage, and comedy here!

I've experienced a lot of adversity and hostility since I first started to discover myself in my youth– but also a lot of kindness and support.

I'm indebted to the fabulous people who make up my community– they have truly been the best salve to my wounds by way of relating, accepting, and nurturing me into who I am today.

You don't just belong here– you are needed, wanted, and worthy of acceptance.

❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍

Pride Moths are my way of pushing back against an uninspired system that punishes the people who aren't bland enough for its 50 Shades of Beige. My hope is that these moths will color this world and make it a bit easier for people to breathe, find themeselves, and each other.

Tools of the Trade

Most of the work I share is made with Procreate on iPad– but I work in non-digital media all the time, too! Nothing beats good ol' paper (well... except scissors)! My prefered non-digital media are:

  • Pentel Graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil (0.9mm)
  • Pentel Clic Eraser
  • Pigma Graphic Pens
  • Uni-Ball Signo White Gel Pens
  • Sharpies
  • Prismacolor Markers
